Weekly Great Yankee Moment

This week I chose a Tino Martinez play.   It was game 1 of the 1998 World Series.  I was actually at this game and this was one of the loudest moments I remember at Yankee Stadium II.

It was the bottom of the 7th inning and here is the play

Here is the box score of the game

Open Thread 6/23/11

No game tonight but plenty to talk about.   Here are some Yankee Notes.

Derek Jeter (calf) threw for the third straight day Thursday.

Jeter has been working out at the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa this week. He intends to return as soon as he’s eligible on June 29, so look for him to ramp up baseball activities in the next few days.

Eric Chavez (foot) said he felt fine after running from home to first base approximately six times Thursday.

It doesn’t sound like much, but this is a big step forward in his recovery from a fractured left foot. Chavez is already taking batting practice and fielding, so he just needs to feel comfortable running before being cleared for a minor legue rehab assignment.

Yankees prospect Jesus Montero was benched two games earlier this month for showing a lack of energy.

Montero has slugged just five home runs this season and thrown out only eight of 45 base stealers while sometimes showing a lack of focus. He’s still a great prospect at the age of 21 and represents the future at catcher for the Yankees, but it seems he might have some maturity issues. “I think he expected to be in the big leagues by now,” said Mark Newman, the Yankees’ vice president of baseball operations. “And that is OK, too. Part of the development process is to learn how to deal with frustration, learn how to deal with things when they don’t go exactly your way.”

Bartolo Colon (hamstring) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Friday.

Colon began a throwing program on Tuesday and could progress to simulated action by early next week if everything goes smoothly in Friday’s workout. The big right-hander is aiming to return to the major leagues just before the All-Star break.

Yanks Split Day/Night Double-Header With Reds

UPDATE: For whatever reason, the links to the 2 different games are exactly the same on the MLB.com site. So, when you click on Game 2, then click the NYY 2, CIN 10 game right next to it, at the top of the site, and go to NYY Recap. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Since I’m doing 2 recaps in one, I’ll simply link the good game reviews from MLB.com. Otherwise, this post would get kind of long.

Have a good day everyone.

Morning Bits 6/23/11

Morning all. Yesterday was four series won in a row for the Yankees.  You keep winning series and you are doing good things.

Today is an off day.  Keep checking in on the site for articles throughout the day.

and here are your links.

* This doesn’t make sense at all but Girardi says Jeter will bat leadoff when he comes back from the DL.

* Reyes to the Yankees is not going to happen according to Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

* Also there have been positive headlines for Posada after Game 1 yesterday.
