Joba and Pitching News

by Matt S.

Joba Chamberlain remains ahead of schedule in his recovery from Tommy John elbow surgery.

Chamberlain began a throwing program in September and has experienced no abnormal pain or discomfort since. He’s aiming to get back to full health by mid-April of 2012.

According to SI’s Jon Heyman, the Yankees are looking for starting pitching and left-handed relievers this offseason.

A look at the open market shows a number of viable left-handed relief options, highlighted by Jeremy Affeldt ($5 million club option with $500K buyout), George Sherrill, Javier Lopez, and Hideki Okajima. Top starters include C.J. Wilson, Hiroki Kuroda, Edwin Jackson, Erik Bedard, and Mark Buehrle.

CC Sabathia “Prepared To Leave Yankees”

by Delia E.

CC Sabathia may have only 4 years and $96 Million dollars in his contract, but he also has the option to opt out of his contract this year. If Sabathia does opt out, he could either re-sign with the Yankees, or with another team if the deal is better. Sabathia has said that he has prepped if he needed to leave New York for a better deal even though he loves living in New Jersey and playing in New York.

“Of course it would be difficult to leave.” Sabathia told the New York Post yesterday. “It was difficult to leave Milwaukee. But you have to understand that baseball is a business. I do love it here. My family loves it here. But we’ll have to wait and see what happens.”

CC Sabathia went 19-8 with a 3.00 ERA in 2011 for the Yankees and was 11-2 with the Brewers in 2008. The Yankees made an offer to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee in the 2010 off-season for 7 years and $140 Million dollars (which would be approximately $20 Million each year). Lee is 32 years old and is just one year older than Sabathia.
