Cashman says  “No” to Montero, Betances/Banuelos trade to A’s

By Delia E.

According to reports, the Oakland Athletics asked for either Dellin Betances or Manny Banuelos plus Jesus Montero for Oakland Athletics starter Gio Gonzalez. Brian Cashman quickly said no to the offer. Cashman also said that he would never send any of them to Oakland for Gio Gonzalez, kind of like a repeat of the John Danks trade offer from the White Sox. Is anyone good enough for Brian Cashman? Maybe or Maybe not. Stay tuned for more Winter Meeting trade rumors.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the White Sox are asking for an Ubaldo Jimenez-like package for John Danks.

Not surprising. Danks, 26, who is set to make around $7-8 million in his final year of arbitration before becoming a free agent next offseason, and although he had a down 2011 season, he’s fully capable of producing like a No. 2 starter. The White Sox reportedly asked for Yankees prospect Manny Banuelos in return for John Danks during a recent negotiation with the Bronx Bombers.

Williams Ladson of MLB.com reports that Roy Oswalt is looking for a three-year contract.

Some team might be willing to go that far, but it would be a risk. Oswalt is coming off arguably the worst season of his career, is 34 and has a history of back issues. Teams that fail in their quest to land C.J. Wilson or Mark Buehrle might look to Oswalt as a consolation prize.

Our very own Delia wrote about Gio in a Hot stove article a couple weeks ago.  Give it a read to get familiar with him if you aren’t already.

Three-team trade in the works?

Three-team trade in the works?

by Mike D.

The below rumors actually make some degree of sense, in combination with Joel Sherman’s ealier tweet:

“To get Gio from #A‘s, #Yankees probably would have do 3-way deal because Oak wants hi-end young OFs and NYY has none at Double-A or higher.”

Brett Gardner is a high-end, young outfielder, and is more than MLB-ready (which is what Billy Beane is supposedly looking for).

As I said last time regarding rumors from Mike Silva’s New York Baseball Digest– don’t put too much weight in them, as I don’t know how reliable/unreliable they are. However, one of their writers said he has heard from a source about a possible 3-team trade in the works that would land Gio Gonzalez on the Yankees.

A source down at the Winter Meetings informed me of a 3-way deal being discussed between the Yankees, Oakland, and Kansas City. The players discussed were:

Yankees get: Gio Gonzalez

A’s get: LF Brett Gardner from Yanks, 1B Clint Robinson from Royals.

Royals get: RHP David Phelps, OF Michael Taylor, and a PTBNL from Yanks that is expected to be off 40-man roster.

He also notes that the Yankees have been said to be the front-runners for Cespedes, who they would absolutely pursue if they traded Gardner. Make what you want of the above rumors, as I’m unsure of their reliability.

On a another note, Bob Klapisch says the Yankees have spoken to the Athletics about the left-hander, but a deal would only happen in an “overpay” situation.
