Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Yankees are “not confident” Hiroyuki Nakajima will sign and instead will remain in Japan.

The Yankees won the negotiating rights for Nakajima for $2 million, but they view him only as a potential bench option and think they might not be able to offer what he wants to be convinced to go to the states. They’ll have 30 days to try and work out a deal with the shortstop’s representatives.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Yankees and Red Sox are also interested in free agent Hiroki Kuroda.

Kuroda was linked to both teams around the trade deadline, but eventually told the Dodgers that he wanted to stay. Things have changed now that he’s longer an option in Los Angeles. The veteran right-hander has also drawn interest from the Cubs, Rockies and Diamondbacks and reportedly wants a deal worth around $12 million per season.

UPDATE:

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Yankees have won the bid for Japanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima.

The terms of the winning bid aren’t yet known. The Yankees now have a 30-day exclusive negotiating window to work out a contract. Nakajima, a 29-year-old shortstop, is a .302 career hitter in Japan and has surpassed at least 16 home runs and 15 stolen bases in each of the last four seasons. If a contract is agreed upon, he would fit as a utility player for now.

It’s significant to learn that the Yanks have submitted a bid, but the identity of the team with the top bid is not yet known. Nakajima’s team, the Seibu Lions, are expected to make that announcement at some point on Wednesday. The winning team would then be granted an exclusive 30-day negotiating window to agree on a contract. Yankees shopping Burnett at the Winter Meetings

by Matt S.

According to George A. King III, the Yankees are shopping A.J. Burnett at this week’s Winter Meetings.

The Yankees have told teams that they are willing to eat $8 million of the $33 million left on Burnett’s contract, but they haven’t found much interest yet. However, it does indicate that the Yanks aren’t done working on their rotation. Burnett, who turns 35 in January, went 11-11 with a 5.15 ERA and 173/83 K/BB ratio over 190 1/3 innings this season.
