Pineda & Kuroda now Yankees

Kuroda a Yankee as well pending a physical details to come…..

Jack Curry of YES Network reports that the Yankees have signed Hiroki Kuroda to a one-year deal worth between $10-11 million, pending a physical. The 37-year-old Kuroda has very quietly posted a quality 3.45 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over four seasons stateside, averaging 6.7 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9. He’ll join a rotation which is set to include some combination of CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes, A.J. Burnett and Freddy Garcia.

Pineda to the Yankees and Montero to the Mariners

by Matt S.

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Mariners have acquired Jesus Montero from the Yankees for right-hander Michael Pineda. Greg Johns of MLB.com was told by a team source that the Mariners will acquire Montero and right-hander Hector Noesi from the Yankees for Pineda and prospect right-hander Jose Campos. It’s a stunning deal in many respects, but the Mariners needed an impact bat in the worst way. It will be interesting to see whether he is used at designated hitter or whether the club tries to stick him behind the plate. Pineda turns 23 next week and posted a 3.74 ERA and 173/55 K/BB ratio over 171 innings as a rookie last season. He should fit quite nicely behind C.C. Sabathia in the rotation for the next few years.

  1. Gonna throw the comments under this thread. I agree it is a good trade. just sad to see him not get a shot.

Pineda was in a weak AL West and now goes to the ringer in the AL East.

  2. They also get Noesi who could be a starter for them this year.

  3. Yes,but if you take his numbers up until the middle of August,he was just unbelievable!Alot of people thought he was overworked a bit and the Mariners could have and SHOULD have shut him down,or atleast limited his starts…that being said..If Montero cant catch or cant play 1B(unknown at this point) Cashman just got equal value for Montero in a pitcher who has much less risk in that he has an overwhelming successful year in the Majors under his belt…

  4. WOW!

Yanks are making some serious moves.
At first I was shocked and pissed to see Montero moved. i felt if we were going to trade Montero to Seattle we better get Felix back. But the more I look at Pineda I am intrigued. He’s young and cheap and under team control for 5 years. He averages 95 MPH and has a wicked slider but he’s almost exclusively a 2 pitch pitcher….4-seamer and slider. Tinkers with a change and he’s young enough to develop the change and a 2-seamer. If he is an All-Star caliber #2, possibly ace then its a good trade no matter how well Montero hits.

Noesi for Jose Campos is an interesting move. Campos is Seattle’s #5 prospect but still young and raw. He has strikeout stuff and great command.

Kuroda is a great #4 pitcher.

HOWEVER, this leaves a hole in the Yankee offense. i know the Yanks will score runs but I really thought Montero was going to be huge. now the yanks have to make a splash. here are the moves I’d like to see:

    1) Sign Prince Fielder for 1 or 2 yrs @ $25M per to be the DH
    2) Trade Phil Hughes for Seth Smith. Platoon Smith and Andruw Jones at DH
    3) Low cost solutions would be J.Damon, Vlad or Hideki Matsui

But what to do with all these pitchers now? At least 1 and maybe 2 of the Burnett/Hughes/Garcia group have to go.

    • The other possibility is you sign the Cuban Cespedes but I think the marlins are going HARD for him.

    • I think #3 in your comment is the way the Yankees go for the DH. I definitely think AJ is the odd man out.

I like the rotation of: CC, Pineda, Nova, Hughes and Garcia. With Phelps and Warren first up in the wings as insurance probably.

This definitely give the Yankees the payroll flexibility to go after Hamels or Cain next winter if they are still available and a decent chance of gotting at the $189MM tax threshold for 2014.

      I like it.

  5. I just read where the Yankees signed Koroda for 1 year $10MM

  6. Holly cow. Nothing happens for months. Now everything in the space of like 3 hours.

  7. Next possibility….

trade for a 3B like Chase Headley or Daniel Murphy. Let them split 3B and DH with ARod. baby ARod with 80-90 starts at DH this year to keep him fresh and healthy. And you pick up a good LH bat in Murphy or Headley.

You have Hughes, Phelps Or Warren to trade….or possibly Eduardo Nunez could be involved.

  8. Just read this on MLB TradeRumors:

Yankees Looking For Hitting, Carlos Pena On “Radar”
By Mark Polishuk [January 13 at 8:48pm CST]
Now that the Yankees have addressed their pitching issues with two major transactions, the club is looking to add some offense, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Carlos Pena is “now on their radar,” and Heyman says the Bronx Bombers could be looking at other hitters as well.

  9. Delia, the good lord willing AJ is someone’s else’s problem in the next 24 hours. At least that’s my humble opinion.

Give Hughes the shot and let him lose it. If that’s they way it works out.

  10. Just got home and heard the news. Wow u go away for a few hours and look what u miss lol. Great deal for the Yankees. They get a stud pitcher on the cheap without raising payroll. Will be sad to see Jesus go but thats what happens. Not as big on Kuroda as most. Thought he benefited from the NL West a little bit at least. The competition for the 5 spot will be crazy.

  11. Trading Hughes right now would be a mistake. His trade value is the not good at all and he makes minimal money.
