Morning Bits: Burnett, Spring Training, Top Teams

Good morning all.  Back to another start of the week.  But get excited only 6 days till pitchers and catchers report to spring training.

Let’s get right to the links….

* The New York Times reports that the Yankees and Pirates are in serious talks for Burnett.  I’m sure many of you prayed last night for this to happen.

* The New York Post chimes in on the verge of the AJ Trade as well.

* Bryan Hoch of mlb.com writers that the Yankees are heading to camp with a plethora of starters.

* Joel Sherman of the New York Post states that the Red Sox and Yankees are no longer alone at the top.

  1. Round and round we go. Where Burnett goes, no on knows. Will it be Pittsburgh, will it be Cleveland or maybe Kansas City? Round and round we go, I just hope Burnett goes.

  2. Sorry, but I can’t find any place else to put this news about ORTIZ’s hearing.

    THIS JUST IN:
The 2 parties have settled at the midway point.

Red Sox, David Ortiz Settle At Midpoint
By Tim Dierkes [February 13 at 9:28am CST]
Hours before today’s arbitration hearing, the Red Sox and designated hitter David Ortiz settled at the midpoint for $14.575MM, tweets ESPN’s Buster Olney.

  3. OK it’s eerily quiet today on the AJ Burnett front.

  4. An AJ UPDATE:

    A.J. Burnett Rumors: Monday
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 13 at 4:00pm CST]
The Yankees and Pirates have been discussing a deal that would send A.J. Burnett and cash to Pittsburgh for two minor league players. Four teams are in on the right-hander, but the Yankees seem to prefer the Pirates. Here are the details from yesterday, and here are Monday’s rumors:

The Yankees and Pirates are still discussing the deal and it’ll probably be completed, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. It seems likely that the Pirates will take on $13-15MM of the $33MM remaining on Burnett’s contract and give up two non-roster players.

  5. If Cashman can get the Pirates to “belly up to the bar” so to speak for $15MM of the $33MM God Bless him. He should take it and run.

  6. Matt, I have a real good feeling about this. You may very well have been right when you said yesterday they could be waiting for Valentines Day to make the deal.
