Yankees Sign LHP Rapada To Minor League Deal

Yankees Sign LHP Rapada To Minor League Deal

By Delia E.

The New York Yankees may start heading to Spring Training tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean the signings are going to stop. Yankees have signed LHP Clay Rapada to a minor league contract which includes an invitation to Spring Training  reported by Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Rapada was with the Baltimore Orioles last season before being DFA’d on February 6. Rapada in his career has a 5-0 record & a 5.13 ERA. Here is the tweet, confirming the deal:

The deal comes shortly after Yankees released Hideki Okajima after he reportedly failed his physical.

  1. Rapada’s side-arm slinging stuff seems effective vs LH hitters but is total under-hand old-man’s softball slop to Right handers.

He’s a decent addition to battle Cabral & O’Conn to see if one of them seems effective enough to warrant a spot in the pen as a 2nd lefty. But if neither seems impressive I’d just rather go with a RHP since there are plenty of effective arms.

    Figure these 6 are defenites:
    Mo / DRob /Soriano
    Logan / C.Wade
    F.Garcia or Hughes

leaving 1 possible opening for one of these guys until Joba returns:

    LHP – Rapada / C.Cabral / M.O’Connor

RHP – Kontos / Whelan / Delcarmen / Adam Miller / Brad Meyers / DJ Mitchell

  2. I still hope the Yankees give the kid they picked us as a rule 5 this past winter Cabral a shot if they decide they need 2 left handers. Assuming he pitches well during spring training.

  3. If I can change the subject for just a minute and jump ahead to the FA class in catchers for 2013. As it stands right now, I believe the following catchers will be available:

    Russell Martin
    Mike Napoli
    Miguel Montero
    Yadier Molina

Going to be interesting class if they all hit Free Agency.
