Yankees Unveil Opening Day Lineup

Yankees Unveil Opening Day Lineup

By Delia E.

According to Wallace Matthews of ESPN from what Joe Girardi said from his news conference this morning, this would be your 2012 Opening Day lineup:

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Nick Swisher RF
Andruw Jones DH
Russell Martin C
Brett Gardner LF

Now this lineup would be if David Price was pitching. If James Shields pitches on Opening Day then this wold be your 2012 Opening Day lineup:

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Robinson Cano 2B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Nick Swisher RF
Raul Ibanez DH
Russell Martin C
Brett Gardner LF

The lineups will stay this way  unless one of these players outshines during Spring Training. Let’s look forward to a competitive and fun Spring Training!

  1. Cashman on Francesa show.

Asked Cash one word to describe AJ he said “inconsistent”

about Sabathia’s weight he said. He had to have a sit down with him to keep control of his weight. Will help strain on his knees.

On why he chose Ibanez. Left hand bat that can hit long ball and play outfield. We have alot of talented OF’s in the system but they are far away from making it.

What do you want out of A-Rod and Jeter with DH and game played? Girardi will make those decisions. Alex will communicate if he his hurt and Jeter will not.

who plays first base when swisher sits. Cash replied with Swisher.

Does Romine start the year in AAA? He can make it but really needs 500 more AB’s in the minors.

What do you expect of Kuroda? he is a pro and we want to see him provide quality innings. Kuroda is a solid four for us.

Pineda? he is not a number 2. he needs develop a 3rd pitch. Pineda has alot of potential. He has alot of work to be done. Rather undersell than over hype.

    • Good synopsis Matt.

He was also very high on Hughes and said he has no concerns with him being a very good starter as long as he’s healthy. Said he expects to have to think about signing him to an extension at the end of the year and that fans will go back to calling him Phil Franchise. lol

He really tried to downplay Pineda. Sounds like he doesn’t want to put pressure on him. I’ve heard him say a few times since the deal…..I’d rather under-promise and over-deliver.

    • So if I’m understanding Cashman’s last 2 comments I come away with:
      CC’s #1 (no surprise there)
Nova #2 (a little bit of a surprise there)
Pineda #3 (makes sanse, I guess)
Kuroda #4 (a little surprised there)
Hughes ?? (Cashman has stated he wants him to be a starter that would make him #5)

      Where does that leave Garcia?
