Sources: Additional wild cards a “go” for this season. Playoffs to expand from eight to 10 teams. Announcement tomorrow. #MLB

  2. Well it looks like Russell Martin won’t be the only “quality” catcher to hit FA at the end of this season.

Miguel Montero and the Diamondbacks have decided to table extension talks until after the season. Montero settled for $5.9MM just recently before the case went to the arbitrator.

  3. It looks like Napoli now is going to test FA after the 2012 season. The numbers of quality catchers appearing to want to test FA is starting to get crowded. That can only depress the market much like the market for closers this past winter.

  4. Right now it looks like: Napoli, Miguel Montero and Martin will test FA market in 2013. Aside from the grocery list of other catchers.

    • I think they are all shocked at Molina’s deal and are salivating.

      • I agree. I think they are all salivating. But the realist in me tells me the catchers market next winter is going to wind up like the closers market this past winter. One or maybe 2 guys will make out like bandits and the rest will be disappointed.

        • You’re probably right. Teams are usually pretty conservative with Catchers since it’s not a position that lends itself to longevity or consistencty.

Best case for the Yanks is they offer Martin arbitration and he eventually takes it. Then in 2014, Romine and Cervelli take the reigns with Murphy and Sanchez getting close.
