Spring Training Notes: 3/3/12

Ivan Nova pitching today for the Yankees

The Yankees are fresh off their 8-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Clearwater today, but there was a lot that happened today. So let’s get to the notes of today!

— When Raul Ibanez was greeted at the plate, it sounded as if it was a lot of boos going around. As a matter of fact, it was just the Phillies fans saying “Rauuuul!” his old chant when he was a Philadelphia Philly. “I’d like to think those are Rauuul’s.” Ibanez joked. “I think that those were good ones.”

— During today’s game David Phelps was extremely sharp while Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances looked a bit shaky during their starts today. Banuelos left a bases loaded jam while Betances issued 2 walks in the inning and only used fastballs. Although Banuelos had struggles, Girardi says that he looks better this season than last season.

— Joe Girardi met the father of Steven Smith, a minor league broadcaster who was tragically killed in December of 2010 today in Clearwater. He was on the field with Girardi before the game and even had the whole Yankees team sign the sign that Matthew Smith was holding before the game. It was Matthew Smith’s first game since his son died. “I just didn’t want Steven to be forgotten.”

Just a reminder that tomorrow’s game is a televised game. The game will be televised on the YES Network. Freddy Garcia is slated to get the start.

  1. Good stuff D. Looking forward to see the lineup tomorrow and who he Girardi starts and who stays back to get some work.

  2. Did any of you read the post in Yahoo sports by Tim Brown, “Alex Rodriguez steps up to challenge Yankees”?
It is great to see A-Rod take charge like he did, and until he shows the signs of decay many have been looking for, he is still the best player on the team. Also a stand-up guy.
Cano has a very sweet swing and a lot of talent but, A-Rod still is the ruler, others are measured by and Cano is on the rise.
Without A-Rod taking Cano and Milkie under his wing in 2009 (I think) and talking like a Dutch Uncle Cano would still be a underachiever. A-Rod asked them to join him in his workouts, the rest is history!

  3. Let the fun begin,Games!!!!!!Enough talk of budgets!!!!!!!
    Very nice Delia.
    BP observations;
1-Phelps looked great,Mechanics were clean with great arm action on all of his pitches,He looked fearless.IF the hype wasn’t there he would be the pick over the B’S who both blooked shaky,Manny is younger so he gets a pass but Betances has never impressed me and he should be traded or moved to the pen.His arm action isn’t clean and he is gangly in his delivery.
    On to the hitters
I like Hall over Chavez .Hall is much more atheletic and can play ss,2b,3b,and the of.He also works withKLONG and that could give him upside with the bat. Also keepig Hall could allow the Yanks to let Nunez play SS at AAA until he is needed.Sitting Nunez on the bench will not help his development.
Its probably just me but Dickerson allways looks good and I can’t figure out why he never gets a shot???
The kid from Colorado Cade also looks strong,we will see more of him.

    • Hall was very impressive yesterday, I agree. Some of the plays he made yesterday, reminded me of Robinson Cano and for a moment I thought that Cano was playing instead. I think that both Hall and Chavez could make the bench but Chavez could replace A-Rod on days that A-Rod needs rest.

Also, Dickerson looked very well yesterday. Don’t understand why the Yankees are starting him in AAA instead of letting him join the 40 man roster.

And yesterday the only pitcher that impressed me was David Phelps. Banuelos pulled a “David Robertson” in his second inning of work and Betances’s command was shaky allowing 2 walks in the inning. Phelps stayed ahead of hitters, located his pitches & like you said was fearless.
