Pineda thrills as Yanks sweep Braves 8-3
Coming into Game 2 of the 2 game set with the Braves, the story with Michael Pineda was the velocity issues from his last outing. Today wasn’t an issue, as the Yankees were able to sweep the Braves in a 2 game set 8-3 with some key help from the offense.
Pineda topped at 94 MPH but continued to be at 88-91 MPH which shows a sign that his arm strength was building up. So far Pineda’s arm is a secondary concern for the Yankees, but the Yankees believe that Pineda’s arm strength will increase as Spring Training continues.
Pineda spoke to the Daily News saying that he’s not trying to throw into the mid-90’s right now. “I conserve a little bit (of) my energy. I can try, when I pitch again, throwing a little more hard and a little more hard and a little more hard. My last start in spring training, I’m throwing harder.”
Some of the Yankees regulars had a good day such as Alex Rodriguez (1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s), Mark Teixeira (1 for 1 with 2 BB) & Brett Gardner (1 for 4 with 1 BB 1 SB) while Andruw Jones struggled (0 for 3 with 2K’s)
WHAT’S NEXT: The Yankees are playing a split squad game tomorrow (both games are televised and both games are at 1:05pm). Derek Jeter will lead the Yankees lineup vs. the Phillies & Brett Gardner will lead the Yankees lineup vs. the Twins. CC Sabathia is slated to start vs. the Phillies & Phil Hughes is slated to start vs. the Twins.
