Super Nova returns but Yanks fall 1-0 to Red Sox

Ivan Nova knew that his last 2 starts weren’t great, but this time Nova emerged and pitched 4 shutout innings in a Yankees 1-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Nova’s fastball was working for as well as his secondary pitches, his line looking impressive. In 4 innings he gave up 2 hits, no runs, no earned runs, no walks and 3 strikeouts, all while lowering his ERA to 6.23 for the Spring.

When speaking to Jack Curry today, Nova said that he felt as if he was competing for a job even though he is slated to be either in the third, fourth or fifth spot in the rotation. Nova certainly helped his case tonight.

Mariano Rivera came in and pitched a shutout inning, Boone Logan pitched a shutout inning, David Phelps gave up an unearned run in the 9th inning (due to fielding issues by Zolio Almonte) and was charged with the loss and Clay Rapada was making his case as to why he should be the second lefty in the bullpen, retiring the only batter he faced.

Joe Girardi revealed that Rivera was going to make the trip to Miami to play the Marlins and he will wear gray pants. Girardi also plans on starting to make cuts to the team this weekend.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Opening Day lineup (minus Brett Gardner) will make the trip to Dunedin to face the Toronto Blue Jays. The game is on the radio at 1:05pm on

  1. It is amazing how Phelps has been ignored the last two years by most reporters and fans alike…I must admit, of being guilty of the same thing.
He has been good but not flashy for a while now. His up side is not as high as some of the Killer Bs but, if a need should arise this year, I look for him to the 1st one called up.
I think, he and Dillin are both on the 40 man, whereas ManBam is not. Manny will stay in AAA for the duration and come up for the September call-ups.
My opinion, and I stick by it…dat dair was a good un! 🙂

    • You are 100% correct about who is and isn’t on the 40 man roster, my friend.

    • Ken right on about Phelps. He has the the best stat in baseball going for him?He WINS!!!!
The kid has a tremendous winning % lifetime in the minors.
I like what we are seeing from him this spring. He has a bright future IMHO.

      • Ballpark…
Let us hope we can get two or three #1,#2,#3 pitchers out of this bunch of guys. Bringing one up each year…Phelps, JD, then ManBam (just example) would save a lot of problems.
1-Only one rookie at a time
2-40 man roster…Phelps is on already
3-Gives Manny more time to get his pitch count up and get his C&C where it should be.
        4-Helps with the team payroll.
5-Use as trade bait (I hate it, but threw it in)

        • Last year I heard one of the Yankees sports casters on Yes say the prospects are like currency for Yankees use it or trade it for something you can use. WORDS TO LIVE BY.

        • The odds are that only one of them will be good in the majors, 2 would be excellent. It’s a big step from AAA to the majors, and spring training really doesn’t mean that much, half of the players playing right now are AAA players, and the major league players aren’t in the groove yet. The last week and half of the spring teams are set, and players get down to business.
