O/U: Hughes & Sabathia

Player: Phil Hughes
Stat: Wins
The Number: 10

Report: Last year was not a very good year for Phil Hughes. Coming into Spring Training last year, Hughes had gained weight, lost velocity and spent a while on the DL, going 5-5 with a 5.79 ERA to end the season. This year it seems to be a little bit more promising for Hughes. He came into camp lighter, looked like he bulked up and  is competing for a job in the starting rotation. Yankees fans are hoping that Hughes can repeat his numbers from 2010 but it would be a miracle to see Hughes bounce back with those proportions.

The Verdict: I believe that Phil Hughes will go over 10 wins but he won’t go to 18 like he did in 2010. My guess will be approximately 10-11 wins this season if Hughes can bounce back into form. I know this might be an off comparison, but if A.J Burnett could have a bad year and get 10 wins, then so can Phil Hughes.

The Player: CC Sabathia
Stat: Complete Games
The Number: 4

Report: CC Sabathia is undoubtedly the ace of the New York Yankees, so when he has his best stuff, it’s not hard to finish a game that he’s started. In his career so far Sabathia has completed 33 games: 19 with the Cleveland Indians, 7 with the Milwaukee Brewers & 7 with the New York Yankees (2 in 2009 & 2010, 3 in 2011). This may be the American League East, but CC has been able to make hitters look foolish in his time with the Yankees.

The Verdict: I believe this year it will be the year of Yankees pitching, but a  complete game is a hard thing to do. For this one I am not going over or under, but I am predicting that CC will have 4 complete games in 2012.

Do you think that Phil Hughes will have over/under 10 wins this season? Do you think that CC Sabathia will have over/under 4 complete games?

  1. Very nice teaser Delia!
    Phil-17-6 with 0 CG
    CC-20-6 with 3 CG
I hope you all understand this is all a guess, who knows for sure…or how well they will pitch until they start pitching to the real line-ups in a few days. Then we can tell more about how the season my go for them.

    • That’s a pretty good guess with Hughes going 17-6. I hope you’re right.

      • If I am right, I’ll be very happy…my guess have been very marginal the last two-week or so.
I have to get in shape to make the minor league trip this year, I missed it last year…Not this year…knock on wood, or my head, no difference! 🙂

  2. If Hughes is allowed to start the season I will be very disappointed if he only has 10 wins.

    I see:
16 wins 8 loses and 1 rain shortened complete game in Hughes 2012 season.with 3.85 ERA

    For the Big Guy, CC:
    19 wins 6 loses and 3 complete games in 2012 and I’ll go 1 step further a 2.97 ERA.

  3. My guess, CC-18, Kuroda-14, Pineda-13, Hughes-14, Nova-12, Pettite-?

  4. CC has been a model of consistency and a true HORSE for the Yanks. With their awesome bullpen they don’t push him to finish many games but he went at least 7 full innings in 23 of his 33 starts and NEVER failed to pitch into the 6th inning. He is soooo valuable to the staff – Girardi knows the bullpen won’t have to work hard when CC is on the hill.

I predict 20 wins for CC.

Hughes is difficult to predict since the Yanks have 7 starters but if he stays in the rotation al yr I’d say he’s be in the 13-14 win range.
