Different ‘Hughes’ of grey; Yanks fall 7-1 to O’s

Phil Hughes pitching in a 7-1 loss to the Orioles

NEW YORK– The Yankees (13-10) needed a good outing from Phil Hughes (1-4) in hopes of attempting to take the second game of the 3 game series. Well, if you were looking for a good outing–keep looking. Hughes gave up 4  runs on 4 hits and 2 HR’s as the Yankees fell to the Orioles 7-1.

HUGHES NOT GREAT, BUT OK: The Yankees have given Phil Hughes multiple chances but this time it looks as if Hughes’s chances are running out. Here was Hughes’s line: 5.2 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 6 K, 2HR. Hughes decreased in velocity  as the game went on and ended up being hurt by the long ball. An issue for Hughes was throwing too many pitches as he has done in his other starts. Hughes has to learn how to lower his pitch count, because there is no way that Hughes can give depth if he already has 90 pitches by the 6th inning. Here’s what Girardi and Phil Hughes  had to say about Phil Hughes’s outing:

GIRARDI: “I thought Phil was better. Fastball & breaking ball was better. Velocity was better. I think it was progress, I really do. I told him before the game to have a reliever mentality.”

HUGHES: “I felt pretty good early. I pitched really good early. Overall, I was better. I thought it was the best stuff I had all year, but you know what. A loss is a loss.”

E-7 FOR NUNEZ: Yep, not even LF is error-proof for Eduardo Nunez. Nunez failed to get a fly ball which resulted in a 2 run error. Logan was the pitcher when Nunez made the error. The runs didn’t affect Logan’s ERA so his ERA is still 0.96. Here was what Girardi said about Nunez’s fielding:

GIRARDI: “He got a good jump on it. He thought it was deeper than it was and the ball just died out there.”

ROBBIE CANO, IS STRUGGLING YA KNOW: Robinson Cano must be frustrated after not having a good April. He must be really frustrated after not having a good start to his May. Cano was 0 for 4 with 2 K’s, lowering his average to .255. Robbie, I get that your struggling, but we really need your bat (and A-Rod’s and Teixeira’s). The list goes on and on. Here’s what Girardi said about Robbie Cano’s slow start:

GIRARDI: “It’s really weird to see Cano struggle in April. It’s really odd since he usually has such a good April. But I know that he’ll go back to the hitter that were used to seeing.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Ivan Nova will take the mound for the Yankees as the Yankees will try to win the rubber match of the 3 game set. The game will be on YES Network & ESPN and first pitch is at 7:05pm.

  1. I think the verdict should be out on Hughes: his one good season was a fluke as a starting pitcher. If Phelps comes out pitching solid, I say we move Hughes back to the bullpen where he belongs. We can move Nova up to the three spot in the rotation, slot Pettitte in at four for his imminent return, and Phelps can take over five.

  2. Pinstripes 4 Life

I don’t disagree about the rotation, but I think we also need to remember that Hughes is only 25 and pitching in the toughest league in baseball. Give him a year or so with scattered starts, maybe some bullpen time where he regains confidence, and see what happens.

    • If this were Baltimore or Toronto I’d be right there with you, but this is New York. A city that not only expects a winner, but will bash a team that ONLY wins 90 games. If the team didn’t have better options then okay, but it looks as though they do so we should probably roll with ’em.
