Morning Bits: Red Sox, Robertson, Martin, Stats

Good morning all.  Glad to see the Yankees avoided getting swept against the Rays.   Today is an off day before the Yankees begin a series with the Boston Red Sox.

Enjoy some links as you get ready for the morning…..

— Yesterday the Yankees added versatile outfielder Darnell McDonald.  Adam Berry of has the story.

Berry has another articles about how Girardi is being patient despite Martin’s struggles. (Who do you want in the catcher position next year?)

Steven Miller of has the preview of Friday’s matchup.  On the mound will be Kuroda vs Beckett.

Katie Sharp of ESPN stats has an article filled with statistics from the Rays series.

Wallace Matthews of ESPN NY has the rapid reaction of last nights game.

— Yankees manager Girardi has a lot of nice things to say about Robertson writes Mark Feinsand of The Daily News.

  1. Who I want to be the catcher next year…can we bring back Posada from retirement? Andy did it!!

Okay, seriously I don’t see a lot of options for the catcher position since a lot of the top flight catchers are locked for multiple years. Maybe the Yankees might just actually re-sign Russell Martin based on his defense.

  2. I’m with you Delia , Posada got a raw deal. 🙂

  3. I’m only half kidding…..Posada could still pound RHP. He batted .269 with 14 HRs with a tOPS+ of 118. In only 270 at bats. Compare that to Russel AND Montero this year. It’s no contest.

    • Catching is thin in free agency for next year. If Romine comes back strong will they go with him and Stewart? Stewart is actually hitting well the lately.

  4. Look who is showing off his rifle :

  5. A gold glove. In LF?

  6. Also not sure if anyone saw this. BA’s mid season prospect list came out…..

Of the top 50 three Yankees made it.

    #28 OF Mason Williams

    #30 C Gary Sanchez

    # 39 OF Tyler Austin

Austin wasn’t even ranked in the pre season version so kudos for him for having a stellar year and making the mid season version.

    • I was happy to see this, especially Austin since he wasn’t on anyone’s radar coming into the season. The #1 ranked player by BA was Baltimore pitcher Dylan Bundy who dominated Low A and is now kn Hi A.

When I interviewed Tyler in April he had just faced Bundy and I asked how he was. Tyler wasn’t overly impressed at all. He wasn’t disrespectful of Bundy at all but was very matter-of-fact about it which showed me he knows he’s good and pitchers need to worry about him, not the other way around.

      • That interview was great Fish. One of my favorites so far. I liked the part how he beat cancer and he said it made him a better person for it.

I am really looking forward to see how Austin, Williams, and Sanchez do at this next level. Sanchez hit a homer last night.
