Eduardo Nunez, SS New York Yankees 2013.
I remember seeing Nunez in the minors and wrote (in answer to one of the other commenters-old site) something like this; Strong shot-gun arm, very good range and quickness, hands ok but, bad set-up for the ball (footwork). He has a plus bat and speed.
Bottom line: Nunez is no Jeter as a hitter, both are different types of hitters. Nunez will make up for the high avg., by hitting with more power and RBIs…he will not fit into the #1 spot, unless there is no-one else.
He is a very good choice for being the SS after Jeter and can hold the fort untill one of the Super SS are ready to take the job.
What think any of you guys?
Not sure “upper management” or NY will take his growing pains. We live in a different age when Jeter came up or others guys and they made mistakes. Now with mass media etc etc He will get a lot of heat if he causes more errors. Michael Kay already talks negative about him during games or on radio and he is a Yankee homer.
To mattnunezhater26::
All we are saying is give him a chance…..
John Lennon
not a Nunez hater. T-man.
Good scouting report from the Old Ranger.
And I’m not so sure that he won’t be a ” super SS ” of the future.
Nunez will be fine if given an opportunity. However, Jeter isn’t giving up SS for at LEAST 2 more years. Wouldn’t mind seeing the Jeter, Nunez, ARod & someone else (Chavez? or a younger 3B) man the SS/3B/DH positions next yr like I said a few days ago. None of the 4 are equipped to play 160 games in the field for different reasons but all can be effective playing 75% of the time giving us PLUS production from all 3 slots while also grooming a young SS and possibly a young 3B (David Adams?)
Uh oh…..Ken…….Fish says Jeter has 2 more years at SS ! At least!
What say you?
I’d like to see the Yanks try and get Lowrie before the deadline, he can play SS and third and is an upgrade over Nunez. He might not cost that much from the Astros, they seem to be ready to dump everyone.
twasp, fishjam, and old yankee, Who would you give up for Headley or Lowrie ? For Headley I would give up Nunez and Warren, for Lowrie maybe Warren and Murphy or Joseph.
Doug…
I must be excused from this question because I don’t give up 2 or 3 players (unless, they are of the lower group of prospects) for one player over 30 or a very aged 28.
I just don’t think those two are any better than what we have (Nunez) and what is on the way up (2 or 3 young SS) and a couple that may turn out as 3rd basemen. Have faith guys!
Doug…. I’d give up Warren, Joseph and Murphy for Headley. I’d keep Nunez as our future SS. So we’d have headley at third, Nunez at SS and Arod at DH.
The Padres wanted Jake Arrieta and two prospects for Headley from the O’s it will take more than Nunez and Warren I think to get him.
Knowing I will be called a Jeter hater…No way he should be the every day SS after 2013 or less. Give him more rest and he could be passable at SS. But he is going to be older next year, he has many more mistakes this year than usual. Do you really want to see him play poorly? I for one, don’t want to see it but, it seems even if he is playing badly, some fans can’t or won’t see it.
Next year, about half way or less, Nunez (or someone) will play half the games at SS.
Now twasp, that should give you something to run with for a week or two, have fun! 🙂
TWASP says that Jeter should play SS as long as he gets The job done. Right now he is getting the job done. If he starts to cause too many losses with his glove or his batting average drops to a level that there is a better option…..than make a move.
I agree with you…twasp!
But, Jeter is very close to that point right now but, even if he were bad…to whom would one turn to at this day in time? Nunez needs to prove himself, all over again.
Right now, going by the stats…Jeter is still doing ok. One problem with going by stats only, one has to use ones eyes along with the stats.
Is that better? 🙂
Excellent answer oldyankee07.
You should always temper statistics with your own eyes. And my eyes say Jeter is still GREAT!
Twasp, big guy, I hate to say this but you have been giving excuses for a hero of yours…you know he is not great and never has been. He was one of the three best SS in baseball, depending on ones opinion. This year Jeter has gotten homer calls by many officials.
What more do you want, he is the best SS the Yankees have ever had but, he is in decline and being honest…you know it. That is nothing to be ashamed of but, sometimes ones ego will not let one see, what others can plainly see.
Hall of Fame player, I don’t have a problem with that at all!
Another great week for Jeter……no trail off in his batting whatsoever. Tremendous to be in the top 10 in hitting at 38. He wins many more games with his bat than he loses with his glove.
Ken –
After tonight’s HR Cano is projecting to hit 35+ home runs this season. Do you remember when TWASP predicted this?
Nope, sorry about that!
Ken – what? How can you not remember it was only a few weeks ago…..and you replied affirmatively.
Ok, if you say so, it must be true! I just don’t remember it off hand.
If he reaches that amount, it is a big waste of his God given talents. I would have him hit .330 and 20-25 HRs, more valuable to the team.
What if he reaches that amount (35) and hits .320? Sounds like a great season for a second baseman to me.
