Ha. Ha ……Matt S. Thanks for posting that. This comment from Ken OR is the smoking gun. It WAS he who was saying Jeter was hanging on for more hits. Previously he said it was other people on the Internet who mentioned it.
And it seems like the long slide down hill offensively that Ken predicted has not happened as Jeter’s average has gone UP the last 3 seasons and now stands at an astounding .320,

He will have to be pushed out the door just as Posada was. He is sticking around for more hits.
Jeter is a spical player but, he is not one of the gods of baseball, in June, he will be 38. There is no way he should be the every day SS for the Yankees, the only thing he MAY have going for himself is his bat but, that is starting a long slide down hill also.

Don’t take my comments out of context. Others have mentioned that Jeter is holding on for the hits and I have also. I also wrote, a few days ago, that I had not taken Jeters style of hitting into consideration when making that prediction.
A .320 avg is very good but, one looks into his avg and see problems that say .320 is not as productive as most .295 hitters. Have you guys read what everyone is saying? Everyone is saying hits, hits and hits but, it seems like you haven’t looked at the production made from those hits…not much production at all. 38 RBIs, 17 GDP, 69 Runs, I don’t see much production here but, I do see a lot of hits 156 of them, which is good for Jeter.
Twasp, you say Jeter is #26th in SS fielding %, no no no he is 35th, I have my opinion on Jeter and I stick by it, Jeter is now for Jeter not the team…how many times have you seen him bunt to move someone up when he should have been trying to get on base himself to be knocked in.
You also say he only has 8 errors this year, wrong he committed two errors that were not counted as errors in one game and another the next day…home cooking anyone!
Ken, Jeter is what he is…..a great singles hitter with moderate Doubles & HR power but hitting leadoff he won’t get a lot of RBIs. Its not accurate to say Jeter hasn’t had much production. Consider the following:
1) He leads all A.L. Shortstops in Runs Created (72) and in wRC+ 113
2) He leads the Yankees with a .330 BA with RISP, 53 points better than the next best Yankee – Swisher at .277
3) You can’t fault Jeter for his RBI totals. They are all about the hitters in front of him getting on base and having the speed to score. The Yankees 9th batters have a .319 OBP this yr and the 8th batters have a .280 OBP%. Needless to say, that is horrible. Gardner’s .350 OBP% and blazing speed are missed at the bottom of the order. Until Ichiro arrived, there was no speed back there.
4) He’s 10th in the AL with 70 Runs which is less than usual for him. But that is also dependent on the hitters behind him and most importantly the hitter directly behind him. Curtis granderson has a meager .236 BA and is 2nd in MLB with 144 Strikeouts. Grandy has a meager 12 Doubles & 3 Triples. This means he doesn’t advance Jeter much with hits or outs. Grandy does have 30 HRs but 20 have been solo shots. Jeter has been on base on 7 of his 10 HRs with runners on base.

Ken, I’m sure you worked hard on those #s but I must admit I don’t understand them. You say you “wanted to show what i have been trying to say.” Are you saying that he isn’t productive? We’ve already established he’s the most productive SS in the A.L. As far as comparing him to other leadoff hitters, its not really valid or useful to compare players of different positions based on their batting order position. But to play along a bit, the job of a leadoff hitter is to get on base….most of the rest is out of his control Only 2 teams in MLB have a higher OBP% than Jeter’s .361 from their leadoff hitters, Detroit & the Angels with Mike Trout & Austin Jackson.
All stats aside, the bottom line is Jeter is having a good season and much better than most expected at 38 yrs old. He’s helping the team score runs and win and has been a pleasant surprise as the top hitting SS in the A.L. He’s not the same dynamic player he was in his 20’s at all but he is also not done by any means. He’s playing well and you trying so hard to make him look bad is just as crazy as people obsessing over him breaking Rose’s record.

Jeter is a lead-off hitter once in a game, what about all the other times?
Jeter has always been a very good to great SS but, those days are over, even at his age he is still a good SS…much better than I expected!
I am not trying to make him look bad, I am trying to point out just what you said…he isn’t in his 20s anymore! The numbers I showed tell the story! So, why not play Nunez next year as a part-time SS? It would help keep Jeter fresh and get playing time for Nunez.
Yesterday Jeter had a good day, productive at bats are always welcome.

2. Jeter’s job is to get on base, set the table for the middle of the lineup to drive him in…3,4,5. And he’s been doing that better than any other SS in the league. Strike 2!
3. One minute you’re saying he’s selfish and going for hits and hurting the team, and the next minute younare saying he’s sacrificing bunting to move the runners over and NOT going for hits and hurting the team……. That’s ridiculous! Strike 3!

1-I said I wrote it, what is your problem with reading?
2-I said productive hits, “producing something” is the definition. He is a lead-off hitter, you are comparing a lead-off hitter to other SS try comparing him to other lead-off hitters. With runners in position of advantage (1st, 2nd or 2nd 3rd etc) just like last night, no production…or not much.
3-You haven’t ever even tried to understand what I write have you? When a situation calls for a hit and not giving up an out (behind 7-3-example) to move a player up and having 2 on instead of 1 on and 1 out, you don’t bunt. Damn, I thought you played the game and played well.
By the way twasp, don’t nit pick what I write and turn it into something I didn’t really write.
If you and others would quit the blind veneration of Jeter, making him out to be so much more than what he really is I wouldn’t have to point out some of the things you, in your blind adoration of him seem to over look! 🙂

1. You wrote it …then said I took it out of context….but it was in context…as I published your comment in full. You said he is sticking around for hits…..and no one in their right mind believes that but you and the Jeter haters.
2. Productive means creating runs…..why do you ignore FishJams stats ……he leadsvall SS in AL in runs created. He is also batting .330 with RISP. If you cannot understand these saber metrics I recommend you study up on FanGraphs.com and then come back to YFU when you are better informed.
3. Your example of bunting when it is not needed does not apply to Jeter …. If it does cite an example.
4. Whether he is 26th or 30th in career SS fielding % is nit-picking on your part ….. The point is he is in the top 10%…… so you shoulnt say he has been bad or below average fielder for his career. By the numbers he has been above averag.
PS….. Please stop calling TWASP blind. There are many blind people who would love to be able to watch a great player like Jeter play…..the Flip….the Dive…..the November HR……but they can’t.
Jeter is 156 for 488, 320 avg. Jeter needs 44 hits in final 46 games for his 8th 200 hit season. Jetrer needs 56 hits in final 46 games for 212 hits, 3300 overall. (20 – two hits games, 16- one hit games, 8 hitless games, 3 games off = 56 hits ).
The past 44 games Jeter has played in, Jeter has 64 hits, 344 avg,…. if Jeter plays in 44 of final 46 games, and gets 64 hits, he will have 220 hits,.. the most he ever had in a season.
SINCE COMING OFF THE DL FOR LAST 80 GAMES OF 2011, JETER HAS PLAYED IN 183 OF 196 GAMES, 250 FOR 772 = 324 AVG, 39 DOUBLES, 13 HOMERS, 114 RUNS
JETER HAS 250 HITS OVER HIS LAST 183 GAMES PLAYED, 1.36612 HITS PER GAME PLAYED—-THATS WAY ABOVE HIS CARRER AVERAGE of 1.27717 hits per game.
I am under the belief that Jeter is going to break the ALL TIME HITS RECORD- 4256.
Jeter plays next year, then the 2014 option year on his option,… gets a new contract 3 years plus a 4th year player option, the 4th year 1 million dollars with one incentive clause- he hits 4257 he gets 50 million dollars.
We have to watch and see before writing Jeter off into the sunset. If Jeter is around 3670-3700 hits after the 2014 season, I feel the Yankees should give him another contract if he wants to keep playing.
This is only Jetrer’s 17th season ( really cant count 1995 because he was in th eminors all season except for a late May call up for a couple weeks when Tony Fernandez got hurt, and a few games in September call ups).
Rose played 24 seasons, Cobb 24 seasons, Aaron 23 seasons, Musial 21 seasons ( plus a call up year), Speaker 20 seasons ( 2 call up years), Wagner 21 seasons, Yaz 23 seasons, Molitor 21 seasons, Collins 25 seasons, Mays 22 seasons ( the top ten all time hit getters) ——– why so many people are calling for both the demise and retirement of Jeter I can not understand. All of these Great Players were afforded the extra seasons late.
As a fan,I am under the belief (not the delusion) Jeter will reach 4256 hits.

Jeter is great or beyond great when a lefty starts a game but that is only 35% of the games he’s started this year. In 74 games 73 starts against right handed starters THE JETER is not good.
In 336 PA his line is .267 ba, .315 obp, .357 slg for a sad .672 ops add to this a less the 12% scoring rate per PA and he’s a huge detriment to winning. Those numbers along with his piss poor defensive play will not allow him to continue playing full time!

Sorry jim but, respectfully, you have to be kidding, not a chance at all. one year with team option for the next year going year by year. He has been getting many hits but not quality hits when needed. Nunez is the future at SS and that means he will split time with Jeter. Jeter will not get that many AB anymore.

Jeter is going to break Pete Rose’s all time hits record of 4256 hits by playing 6 more seasons after this season.
Jeter will be at let us say 3300 hits after this season. He will only need to play 6 more seasons, 2013 through 2018, and get any combination of hits to equal this :::

Plate appearance for plate appearance, Jeter is ahead of Rose in hits respectively right now. ( by maybe 12 or so at of last count about a week ago).

Jeter is the more consistant Hitter than Rose. Jeter is able to get a hit in a game to avoid the hitless game. This is something Rose could not do,throughout his carrer, but especially late.

Yes, Jim, everyone has a right to there opinion. Jeter haters have been saying he has been washed up for years and he’s proven them wrong. If there is one guy you don’t want to bet against , it’s the great Jeter.
twasp, even in 2010, when jeter had 179 hits, and people were starting to write him off,…. i didn’t get it,…… most players in MLB, would give their eye tooth to get 179 hits in a season,.. lol,.. and that is Jeter’;s worst season,……. come on man,….. onl;y Jeter and Cano on the Yankees will get more than a hit per game played this year.

twasp, its 150 hits or more, not 170, you mis-typed,….. they said the stat 2 days in a row on YES recently,….. Jeter had the 2 injury seasons, 2003 156 hits in 119 games played ( it was thew wrist or shoulder oin a hit by pitch) and 2011 162 hits in 131 games played ( they say it was a hamstring, but I am noit convinced, I think the batting coach messed with his swing),.. so he took 18 games off, went to Tampa, and got his swing back.
Good correction Jim…….also some great stats on Jeter to remember
1. 5 gold gloves during the advanced ages of 30-36
2. No Yankee has more stolen bases
3. No Yankee has more singles
4. No Yankee except Lou Gehrig has more doubles
5. No Yankee has more hits.
Jeter only has 8 errors all season, and appears to be locked in playing everyday,……. he has won the gold glove with as many as 15 errors,…… Jeter’s 979 fierlding percentage will go up this season, if he can hold out without another error, the GOLD GLOVE is within reach once again,….. the silver slugger is a fait de complait I believe.
As far as the Yankees stats go,…. they are interesting and relevant,….. simply because the Yankees had so many great players,…. but I enjoy the overall stats more, against all MB PLAYERS, that ever played in MLB, fron 1877 on.
and when you start to look at just players that played their centire carrers 1950 on,….. then even limit it to right handed hitters only, …. the analysis becomes mind-boggling

Jeter may mak,e an error once in a while, or he may not,……. sometimes he will get to a ball, sometimes he wont,…….. especially now at age 38,…… but Jeter has made enough great plays this season at short,.. where is the errors dont come from this point on,.. the gold glove is within reach.

jeter is cuurently 6th amonth al shortstops in fielding percentage this season,… so jj hardy will have the gold glove, .. it is his to lose,.. but there are still 46 games to play,……. but even 6th out og 14 qualifying shortstops in the AL,… Jeter is still near the top this season,…….. yeah , maybe he doesnt reach a ball here or there, but who does,……. there are not a significant amount of ground ball base hits getting by Jeter, where the outcome of games are affected.
This is the real argument, if you had the analysis.
The real analysis would be, how many base hits got by Jeter on the ground,…. where the batter and hitter after scored runs, that the yankees lost the game eventualy that game,…… i cant imagine it is more than 2 times all season.
But I do not have the numbers to support my hypothesis.

You go by stats right? Do you understand that anytime an error happens in a game, it puts undue pressor on the pitcher which is a BIG no, no! 🙂
Jim – sabermetricians would use WAR to most closely describe that analysis…… his defensive dWAR is equal to -1.4 which means he’ll lose you 1-2 games due to his fielding vs replacement. His offensive WAR is 2.8 this year which means he’ll win you 3 games more than a replacement with his bat.
YEAH, I DONT GET WAR,..and at this moment in my life, I have no drive to try to understand WAR,….jeters played 114 games out of 116 team games this season, 100 at short ( 1 of those 8th innibg defensive replacxment in a game that went exrtras), 14 at DH,…. AT THE 14 GAMES AT DH, JETERS 28 FOR 59, 475 ABERAGE,…. JETERS NOT LOSING GAMES BECAUSE OF HIS PLAYING, …. NO WAY, NO HOW,….. FORGET WAR,…. I WANT THE HARD NUMBERS,….. Did you think the Yanks shouldn’t have considered signing Melky or do you think it was worth considering but not now based on the suspension?
. Fish I just felt there was way to much risk involved with giving him big money long term. With the budget we are on now if we are giving big money to a player it better be as close to a sure thing as you can get. 2 teams pretty much gave up on him after the Yankees did. I still didn’t trust his maturity level especially if given big money. Also having corner OF’s of him and Gardner u have basically 0 power coming from your corner OF’s. Understand they can use a good average hitter but they can find one for cheaper and not overpaying based off a career year, which we now know that he had help doing.
I can’t agree with the HR argument since runs are runs and Melky would be a 20-HR guy in YS. The $ question is definitely understandable with the payroll set to go down. But if 28 yr old Melky and 32-yr old Swisher were both in line for the same 4 yr deal at $11-12M, would you have preferred Swish?
Granderson will be in line for an even bigger deal after next season at 33 yrs old and I don’t want to see them sign him to a massive contract til he’s 37 yrs old. You should have chimed in when we all discussed Melky around the All-Star break because now the point is moot. Melky will sign for much less and probably be a great bargain for the team that takes the risk. PEDs are a HUGE shortcut and advantage but they alone don’t turn a .256 hitter to a .346 hitter in 2 yrs. Melky made some lifestyle changes and began to work harder off the field which accounted for much of his improvement. How much so we don’t know since he tainted his performance and his efforts by taking PED.
But Matthew, what would you like to see the Yanks do in the OF this Winter and beyond?
fishjam very succinctly put. Going from .256 to .346 is not on drugs alone. I think, I would NOW take a chance on him but, I wasn’t for it before.
All depends on prices obviously. Im with you on Granderson signing him to a deal worth 20 million a year is not something I want to see now. I would try to trade for Justin Upton this offseason again depending on price. If you want to sign an average/speed guy I would be in favor of Michael Bourn over Melky PEDS or not. He can be the leadoff hitter the Yankees don’t really have as I see Jeter as a better 2 hole hitter. Yes he is 30, which is worrisome because speed is his best attribute but if you can sign him to a 4 year deal I think he should be fine until 34. For Swisher it depends on his price and if he finally produces in the postseason, but probably unlikely he returns.
What does everybody else think of Bourn? Haven’t heard him discussed much. How much do you think he would cost? I think it would be ideal to sign him for CF, trade Granderson, and trade for Upton. Probably living in fantasy land though lol. At the very least sgin Bourn and move Grandy to RF for nxt year.

The rest was a joke referring to ARod’s statement that his cousin Yuri purchased “Boli” aka Primobolan in Dominican pharmacies and brought it to Alex in the States to inject. By no means am I saying all Dominican players use PEDs, just that they are readibly available in stores there. That was in response to Jim’s statement that drug dealers should be arrested…..my point is it can be obtained legally.
