Will late playoff push help Yanks in post-season?

Cano will be a marked man in the playoffs

In recent years, the Yankees have had the luxury to often glide into the playoffs and set things up the way they wanted.  They had the luxury of resting injured or tired players and set up the pitching staff  to their liking.  But this year with the addition of the Wildcard play-in game, the Yankees have had to fight for the division when previously it really didn’t matter if they were the Wild Card.  In fact ever since mid-August when Baltimore tied them in the standings, the Yankees have been playing meaningful games every night.

The disadvantage of having to fight until Game 162 is a guy like Derek Jeter, who has been playing through a bone bruise on his ankle, couldn’t be rested.  Andy Pettitte had to be rushed back from his broken ankle and players in the every day lineup and bullpen have not been able to get a few days off to recharge.  However, with the exception of  Jeter not getting some days off the ankle, I believe losing their 10-game lead and having to fight for the playoffs will help this team.  It reminded them that they can’t take things for granted and it also forced them to make some changes in their style of play.

When the HRs stopped flying at the same rate, they were forced to manufacture some runs and to give prominent roles to guys like Ichiro and Eduardo Nunez.  Getting many of their regulars back from injuries and having to keep the foot on the gas, this team is starting to come together at the perfect time in the season.  They now head into the playoffs with several key players playing well and have some solutions to some of the areas they were struggling in.  Here are some of the positives.

Robinson Cano……Don’t ya know?

He’s had a career year with a .929 OPS and has been absolutely on FIRE as of late.  He has had 9 straight multi-hit games going 24 for 39 with 7 Doubles, 3 HRs and 14 RBI.  He’s hitting .615 with a 1.654 OPS while crushing both LHP and RHP.  Cano has been the team’s best post-season hitter the last 2 years hitting .333 with 6 HR – 15 RBI and a 1.104 OPS in 14 post-season games and will be the 1 guy every oppossing Manager and Pitcher will circle as the guy to not let beat them in the playoffs.  But the fact that the Yanks have their best weapon at the top of his game is a big plus.

The 2 Big Lefties

CC has had his most difficult season as a Yankee this year with 2 separate stints on the DL.  He had some rough outings in early September which had many people questioning his health but his last 3 starts have all been superb.  He’s gone 8 innings each game and allowed 2 runs or less.  Hitters are batting .155 off him and he’s K’d 28 in 24 ip.  CC was probably the main reason why the Yanks won the WS in 2009 as he was a dominant Ace in all 3 series that year.  The last 2 post-seasons he’s struggled but if his last 3 outings are any indication, he’s armed and ready to lead this staff thru October.

The Yanks also have their warhorse back in Andy Pettitte to play wingman to the Ace.  Andy always gives a good effort and keeps the team in the game and has proved he is ready after 3 strong post-DL starts with a 1.62 ERA.  With CC and Andy at the top, the Yanks can favorably match up against any A.L. team’s top 2.  Kuroda & Hughes are as good or better than most #3/4 pitchers also so the rotation looks promising.

The Lineup is Set

With almost everyone  back healthy the Yanks have a set lineup vs LHP and RHP.  Eduardo Nunez has emerged as a solid DH option vs LHP so Girardi has NO excuse to start Andruw Jones at all.  Against RHPs, Joe has the choice of playing Eric Chavez or Raul Ibanez.  Chavez has butchered RHP all season to a .908 OPS. and while Ibanez doesn’t have gaudy numbers, his knack for getting the clutch hit has been a huge factor this year.  The other benefit is if Tex or Swish or anyone else are having poor postseason’s, Girardi has a legit option in Chavez or Ibanez to  use in their place.  In past years when Tex and Swish were struggling in the playoffs, Girardi always said he had no other viable options……well, now he does.

The lineup also has a nice mix of hitters now with differing styles.  Earlier in the year, the Yanks were totally reliant on the long ball but now with Nunez, Jeter & Ichiro, they have 3 solid table-setters, 2 with great speed who can create opportunities.  They have their masher in Cano and  Martin is swinging the bat a lot better.  The key to the lineup is going to be the group of ARod, Teixeira, Swisher & Granderson.  At least one guy from that group has to be hitting well each series.  Any of them can get hot and wreck a game with a HR or 2 and the Yankees badly need production from this group to advance.  Every team is going to try to avoid Cano and this group has to make them pay.

What do you all think?  Would the Yanks have been better off having clinched the division early and coasting in or has the September fight helped form the team and prevent them from easing up?  I’m feeling better about the team now than I have at any point this season.  This team looks more balanced now than it has all year and fending off Baltimore should give them confidence having played playoff-caliber games for weeks.

  1. DID THE YANKEES ANNOUNCE THE POST SEASON ROSTER YET?

    • JIM – they won’t announce until they know who they are playing. We know the definites are:

      C – Martin and Stewart
      1B – Tex
      2B – Cano
      SS – Jeter , Nunez
      3B- ARod, Chavez
      LF – Ichiro
      CF- Grandy
      RF- Swish
      DH- Ibanez

SP – CC, Andy, Kuroda, Hughes
RP- Sori, DRob, Logan, Joba, Phelps

That’s 21 definites. If I had to guess at the last 4, I’d say:
      Dickerson, Gardner, Lowe and Rapada

The other possibles are Eppley, Nova, AJones and Cervelli. But I think they like Lowe over Eppley and Nova unless they decide they don’t need Rapada. As for Jones, Girardi will likely want to keep him but Gardner and Dickerson offer more Value IMO.

      • I bet you they keep Jones because they don’t need another lefty.

        • Matthew – Are you saying they’ll keep Jones over Rapada or over Gardner or Dickerson?
IMO there’s a chance that Girardi keeps Jones over Dickerson but I think that would be a mistake. I can’t think of anyone I’d use Andruw Jones to PH for. Gardner and Dickerson both supply great defense, great speed and can handle the bat. I’d rather see them bat vs a LHP than Jones right now.

Matthew, if you were Girardi, would you put Jones on the roster? nd if so, who would you leave off?

          • I know I would be in the minority but I would probably keep him over Dickerson.. Dickerson is a career minor leaguer and we already have Gardner as a defensive replacement/base runner so we don’t really need another. Against lefties we would also have Nunez on the bench to pinch run. Jones still has the big experience and they don’t need 3 lefty bats on the bench. Not saying I would ever use Jones either. I know most won’t agree but I see Dickerson as a career minor leaguer not the guy some have been making him out to be.

            • agree on some disagree on others. Dickerson could def probably start on many other teams. I am with you giving Jones a shot. If it’s a tie game and goes extras would you rather have Jones come of the bench to maybe win the game or Dickerson. I’d take Jones. Call me crazy

              • I agree Matt. He is a veteran guy who has experience and can still run into one. I know the evidence of that hasn’t been there just more of a feel thing for me. Dickerson has had chances other places and has failed.

                • I don’t think Dickerson has failed in many other chances and even if he did all that matters is here and now. Andruw Jones hasn’t hit a lick in months. Since July he’s hit .142 in 125 PAs and has looked dreadful.

Dickerson is a career .266/.352/.407/.760 hitter in 600 scattered PAs over 4+ yrs as a back-up. He is a plus defender and a plus baserunner and without a doubt a better ballplayer than Andruw Jones right now.

The argument for keeping Jones is wanting to have a balanced bench with an additional RH batter. His one attribute is power so if you are down 3 with 2 on and 2 outs in the 9th and a Lefty pitching, you can put him up there and pray he connects. But who would you PH him for? Ibanez? Joe won’t take out any of the regulars so Ibanez would be the only guy and I’d rather see Ibanez bat than Jones.

So while I understand wanting to have another RH bat and a power hitter, I would just never use Jones as the manager in a big spot. Heck, if I really had to take a RH hitter I’d take McGehee or Cervelli over AJ. But as I mentioned, I think Girardi will want to keep him since his binder says he must keep another RH hitter on the bench and Joe loves the vets.

      • fishjam, great post you are right on the money!

  2. Good article FIsh. I think the teams is well balanced now heading into the postseason. I think Cano is on fire and if Tex and Swish decided to wake up in the post season we have a good shot on reaching the World Series.

I would like to see them face Baltimore. how about everyone else?

    • I do not think this is a well balanced team with Girardi at the helm. The question for me is will he manage to win or cater to egos…

Detroit is not a good match for the Yankees.

    • Matt, My only concern would be the lack of at bats for Tex going into the playoffs and whether Gardner can help at all.

  3. Great post Fish. I too feel as confident in the Yankees now than I have really since heading into last postseason. This team seems to be firing on all cylinders, but I try not to get over-confident, because remember, the Yankees defeated a 93-loss, depressed and finished Red Sox team. The series win will give them confidence and their good play better continue into the first game of the ALDS, but overall, I like the Yankees chances, also considering no one else in the A.L. is a true threat or favorite compared to the #1 seeded Bombers.

  4. Great Posting fishjam…
The only thing I have against having to play everyone up to the last game is, some of the guys did need rest. Jeter (ankle), Andy both of whom you mentioned above but also, Granderson, Cano both of whom played damn near every game this year.
Having to play til the end, may have sharpened some of the guys up a bit. We have a better idea what Joba will and will not give us now as to earlier in the year. We also know Brett can be used in the field and need not have to be taken out if he comes up to hit. A-Rod is getting hits as you said but, he is still not consistent with his approach at the plate…one time he clears but keeps his weight back, using only his hands, next time he will clear late or early with bad timing.
Oh well, as you pointed out; we do have Jeter, Itchy, Cano, Martin, Nunez and lest we forget, two of the better clutch hitters on the Yanks, Cisco and Ibanez! IF one of the other three guys can get on track, we should be on the way!

    • Old Ranger Ken…good evening. How are things on the St.Lawrence Sea Way?.. Set your traps, yet? If it means anything, I see the same as you, with Alex. You, and others explain it better than I do, but I agree with you. Off balance, out in front, early. You take care……………….talk soon.

  5. jim2222/4444………….up to a challenge?…….. Or, being creative? ………Curious?…You need a Gravatar…a photo, logo, image, before your name. You are too complex, hard to figure out, to have that purple exploding thing, next to your name. You are up to it, but will you do it?

  6. The Yanks have one of the best hitting teams in the playoffs, a solid pitching staff, and a good defensive team. Of the teams in the playoffs Texas, Baltimore, and the Yanks have hitters parks, while the Tigers and A’s are pitchers parks. The 2 best hitting teams the Yanks and Texas have had trouble in Coliseum, and the A’s have one of the best pitching staffs. The biggest advantage this year is winning the division so the A;s, Tigers, and Yanks should have the edge. The Tigers and A’s rotation could be better than the Yanks, with the Yanks having the edge in hitting.
