Cashman Doesn’t Expect High Quality Pitchers to Become Available

CASHMAN DOESN’T EXPECT HIGH QUALITY PITCHERS TO BECOME AVAILABLE

MLBTR:

As Bartolo Colon, Phil Hughes and Rafael Soriano work their way back from injuries, their general manager is surveying the trade market for possible targets. Yet Brian Cashman doesn’t see many quality arms available, so he expects his strongest pitching reinforcements to come from within the organization, according to Newsday’s Ken Davidoff.

“I’d be shocked if I could trade for anything better than what I’m getting off the DL, both with starters in Colon and Hughes and in the bullpen with Soriano,” Cashman said.

The trade market develops quickly, especially in late July, so the Yankees may find an elite starter or reliever on the market eventually. They’ll look everywhere for possible upgrades with an emphasis on improving the rotation, according to Davidoff.

Well there’s a loophole in what Cashman says. Anything better than what he’s getting off the DL (Colon) would mean an elite pitcher such as King Felix. The upgrade does not need to be over Colon. They could use an upgrade over Freddy Garcia/Ivan Nova and an upgrade over Lance Pendleton/Brian Gordon/Hector Noesi. And pitchers better than them should become available, just as they always do each year at the deadline.

Yanks Split Day/Night Double-Header With Reds

UPDATE: For whatever reason, the links to the 2 different games are exactly the same on the MLB.com site. So, when you click on Game 2, then click the NYY 2, CIN 10 game right next to it, at the top of the site, and go to NYY Recap. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Since I’m doing 2 recaps in one, I’ll simply link the good game reviews from MLB.com. Otherwise, this post would get kind of long.

Some quick Notes

Yankees placed RHP Jeff Marquez on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

The Yankees claimed Marquez off waivers from the White Sox in early June after he was designated for assignment by Chicago. The 26-year-old righty has registered a 2.25 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in four relief innings.

Yankees recalled RHP Buddy Carlyle from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Carlyle spent about a month in the majors earlier this season, posting a cool 2.70 ERA in mop-up duty. He should serve as a middle reliever this time around.

Morning Bits 6/21/11

Nice start from Nova last night.  Let’s hope the winning continues again tonight.  If you want to see his start in a minute video clip click his name.

Here are your morning links…

* A-Rod is feeling O.K. but he is still a little banged up.

* Brian Gordon is ready for his second start with the Yankees today.

* SWB Warren had an impressive win last night.

Rafael Soriano (elbow) arrived at the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa on Monday morning.
Soriano is expected to begin a throwing program within the next few days. He’s already been playing catch for about a week but still needs to prove the health of his elbow by throwing off a mound. The right-hander is not expected to return to the major leagues until mid-July.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi confirmed Monday that Phil Hughes (arm) will make two more rehab starts.
Hughes struck out seven batters and hit 95 mph with his fastball in an impressive rehab debut this weekend with Single-A Staten Island. He will move along to Double-A Trenton for his next outing, then perhaps Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for his rehab finale. The young right-hander is on track for an early-July return

Game review from MLB.com’s Matt Fortuna:

NEW YORK — A day before he put pen to paper, before he could put on a Major League uniform for the first time in three years, Brian Gordon went to a field across the street from Yankee Stadium.

Thirty-two years old and not yet officially a Yankee, Gordon tossed with baseball operations assistant Brett Weber, catching the eye of one passerby who stopped to say Gordon had a nice arm.

Unbeknownst to that observer, Gordon would take the mound one block over for the real thing the next day.

Solid win for the Yanks today. It was a very good game. Gordon pitched quite well, and Brett Gardner got the walk-off in the bottom of the 10th. As usual, full game review will come tomorrow morning.

In transaction news, the Yanks sent Lance Pendleton back down to AAA. Also, Amaury Sanit was released. Sanit had just been sent to the DL for his elbow.

Also, Scott Kazmir has been released from the LA Angels. According to Alden Gonzalez:

Cashman said he hasn’t looked into the possibility of acquiring Scott Kazmir but will eventually. “I know he’s struggled,” he said.

We’ll keep you posted on any Kazmir rumors.

Anyway, a WIN for the Yanks. Use this as an open thread. Have a good night everyone.

Game Review from MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch:

NEW YORK — Growing up near Baltimore, Mark Teixeira used to marvel at the switch-hitting exploits of Eddie Murray, passing through the turnstiles wondering which side of the plate his hero would homer from that night.

Now Teixeira has equaled the Hall of Famer in at least one category, homering from both sides of the plate for the 11th time in his career, helping lead the charge in a 12-4 victory over the Rangers on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.
