CC Sabathia to DL

CC Sabathia to DL

By Delia E.

Well, CC Sabathia is the next Yankee who will join Mariano Rivera & Brett Gardner on the exclusive DL list. Sabathia has a Grade 1 adductor strain and didn’t tell anyone about it until after his bullpen session yesterday. Sabathia will be out until after the All-Star Break. But fear not (or fear a lot): The Yankees have summoned Freddy Garcia to come into the rotation to take CC’s place in the meantime. You know how things were too good to be true for the Yankees? Well–we were just slapped back into reality.

Yanks sign 19-yr old Cuban LHP Omar Luis Rodriguez

Yanks sign 19-yr old Cuban LHP Omar Luis Rodriguez

According to MLB.com, the Yanks have agreed to a minor-lg deal with 19-yr old Cuban LHP Omar Luis Rodriguez worth an estimated $4-5 Million.  I don’t know a great deal about Rodriguez but I love the deal since it was one of the teams last chances to exert its financial advantage in the International Market before the new CBA spending restrictions begin July 2nd.

There isn’t a whole lot of information out about Rodriguez although he defeated Team USA in the 2010 World Junior Baseball Championship.  That game earned him a big reputation as he pitched a 144-pitch complete game with 8 K’s.  Rodriguez was one of 4 Cuban teenagers – along with Jorge Soler – to be declared a free agent earlier this month.

Jorge Soler chooses Cubs over Yankees; signs with them

Once again the Yankees get the odd end of the stick. After speculation that Jorge Soler might sign with the Yankees, Soler decided to sign with the Chicago Cubs.  Soler was supposed to be a cheap defensive outfielder (think Brett Gardner but with power). The Yankees felt that the Reds had overpaid Arolodis Champan and that the A’s overpaid Yoenis Cespedes which was why they proceeded Soler with caution.

Gardner experiences setback

Gardner experiences setback

Brett Gardner had another setback in his rehab from an elbow strain.  Per ESPN, Joe Girardi says he will now be out until after the All-Star Break.  This is terrible news for the Yanks as they badly need all of his elite skills – defense, speed, hitting with RISP and ability to work pitchers.  I can’t say I am surprised and I am questioning why the Yanks let him play in Charleston yesterday after he scratched Thursday with stiffness in the elbow.  I’m beginning to doubt whether he will return this season at all and think the Yanks need to find a solution that is not on the current MLB team.  That could mean a trade or it could mean finally giving a shot to Ronnie Mustelier or Eduardo Nunez in LF/DH.

Chavez to DL; Yanks call up Nix

Chavez to DL; Yanks call up Nix

The Yankees had made a roster change and for the Yanks, it’s not good. The Yankees have placed Eric Chavez on the 15 day DL after suffering a concussion in last night’s game. The Yankees refused to send down a pitcher, instead they brought up young Jayson Nix to be another bat on the bench. In Scranton, Nix is batting .233 with 0 HR’s & 4 RBI’s.

Freddy Garcia goes to bullpen

Freddy Garcia goes to bullpen

By Delia E.

Freddy Garcia’s tenure in the Yankees rotation is officially over as of today. No, he wasn’t released from the team but he was added to the Yankees bullpen. Yankees called up D.J. Mitchell earlier today to add depth to the Yankees bullpen and though not official, it looks as if David Phelps will get to keep the rotation spot warm–until Andy Pettitte comes back.

There is still one issue though; the Yankees still have 26 men on the roster meaning someone has to be sent down to make room for Mitchell. This also isn’t official but it could be Cody Eppley that gets sent down.

Update: Cody Eppley was just optioned to Scranton to make room for Mitchell.

Update #1: According to Andrew Marchand, this could potentially mean that David Phelps is now in the rotation.

David Phelps’s old friend from Triple-AAA will join the Yankees. D.J Mitchell was called up today just a day after Freddy Garcia blew his last start. There was no counter move at the moment but it looks like Girardi really did sleep on his decision. Mitchell is to make his Major League Baseball debut in today’s game. More on who’s off the roster as this story develops.

Brett Gardner to begin hitting drills tomorrow

It looks as if Brett Gardner is on track to get back in the lineup after his 15 day DL stint is up. According to Joe Girardi, Gardner will pick up a bat and do hitting drills for the first time since last week when he was sent to the DL with a muscle strain in his elbow. Gardner had been limited to just running drills before getting the OK to hit again.

Michael Pineda to have season-ending shoulder surgery

Michael Pineda to have season-ending shoulder surgery

By Brian D.

For one reason or another, this isn’t too shocking. The Yankees have confirmed that the big offseason acquisition Michael Pineda will have to wait until 2013 to make his Yankees debut. The 22-year old has a torn labrum and it will require season-ending surgery.

Pineda still had a decent spring minus his last start where he got injured. Though his velocity was not able to get up to 97 and 98 like it did last season, I still believed he’d be okay whether or not he ever regained the blazing fastball.

Anyway, now that this headache has finally settled, the Yanks are caught in a pretty tough spot. The rotation is already under-performing, and if Andy Pettitte wasn’t coming back, this would’ve been a much more catastrophic hit to the Bombers.

4/22/12 Yankees vs. Red Sox game postponed

Tonight’s Yankees vs. Red Sox game has been postponed due to inclement weather in Boston. The game will be rescheduled with the date TBA. Yankees will leave for Texas with an extra day’s rest while the Red Sox will go to Minnesota and play the Twins. Have a good evening everyone.

Brett Gardner goes to the DL

The Yankees suffered a tremendous loss tonight (no it has nothing to do with the game). Yankees OF Brett Gardner is taking a small trip to the 15 day disabled list with a strained/bruised elbow. The catch that Gardner made last night is most likely the reason that his elbow is strained. The Yankees will recall RHP Cody Epplely to take Gardner’s spot on the roster in the meantime.

Posada to throw first pitch on Friday

Posada to throw first pitch on Friday

By Delia E.

Jorge Posada is coming back to the Bronx…if only for an evening. Jorge Posada is slated to throw out the first pitch on Friday evening to commence Opening Day for the Yankees. Posada is also being honored with the “Pride of the Yankees Award” at Thursday’s homecoming dinner.

After Posada throws the first pitch, one of the stars of the Broadway musical Newsies named Jeremy Jordan will sing the national anthem, followed by a Navy F-18 ceremonial fighter over the stadium. “God Bless America” will be sung by Paul Nolan of the Broadway show Jesus Christ Superstar.

Pineda to the DL

Yankees placed RHP Michael Pineda on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder tendinitis. An MRI revealed inflammation to Pineda’s right (throwing) shoulder. The injury will likely allow the Yankees to have Pineda spend some time in the minors or extended spring training. Freddy Garcia is set to open the season as the Yankees’ fifth starter.

Phil Hughes pitching update

Phil Hughes pitching update

By Delia E.

1:39pm: Phil Hughes had went through 2 scoreless innings at the minor league complex. He pitched a 1, 2, 3 second inning and the final out was a broken bat pop-up that he caught while heading to the dugout.

So far so good.

1:47pm: Hughes gave up a solo HR followed by a quick ground out. He allows 2 runs in the third inning. Keep in mind, Hughes is just getting his work in.

1:55pm: Hughes finishes three innings trailing 2-1 to the Philadelphia High-A team. His catcher is Francisco Cervelli. Not everyone can have the day off today.

2:53pm: Hughes finished the 6th inning 20 minutes ago with his fourth strikeout.  Hughes threw 91 pitches and is most likely done.
