Yanks need productive ARod this October

The Yankees go as ARod goes in October

Now that the Yankees have clinched the AL East, it’s time to think about the post-season.  One of the biggest unknowns is Alex Rodriguez.  Is he healthy?  Is he still capable of being the dangerous cleanup hitter he’s been most of his career?  Can he dominate like he did in the 2009 Post-season or is that hitter gone?

I wish the answer to all of those questions was Yes but Reality paints a different picture.  Alex has been on a slow, steady decline since his MVP season in 2007.  Whether his decline has been caused by age or the multitude of injuries he has endured, there is no doubting he is not the same menacing presence in the cleanup slot anymore.

ARod started this season healthy and was having a solid year until he hurt his knee at Wrigley Field on June 19th.  Up until that point he was hitting .289 – 13hr – 43rbi in 249 ABs.  While those weren’t the dominating numbers he used to put up in his prime, he was on pace for another 30 HR – 100 RBI season.  He went on to play another 3 weeks after the initial knee injury but it was obvious he had Zero leg drive at the plate and was hitting purely with his upper body.  Mired in the midst of the longest stretch without a HR in his career (96 ABs), it was decided that he should have the torn meniscus operated on so he would be ready for the post-season.

This was definitely the right call at the time and he returned 6 weeks later on August 21st with 5-6 weeks to get his stroke back before the post-season.  Unfortunately, Alex injured his right thumb immediately after returning and it has hampered him non-stop since.  He is 11 for 45 with 3 HRs since his return but hopefully he can use the next 5 or 6 days to get somewhere near 100%.

Because of the time lost and the injured thumb, I doubt we can expect ARod to carry the team like he did in the 2009 Playoffs & World Series, but, he needs to have a solid post-season for the Yanks to get where they want.  During his Yankee tenure, there is a clear link to the success of Rodriguez and the success of the team. Since his arrival in 2004, the Yanks have played in 10 Post-season series, winning 5 and losing 5.  ARod has been a paramount figure in why the team won and lost those series.

Here is how Alex Rodriguez has hit in his 10 Post-season series with the Yanks:

While ARod is still a huge piece of the lineup, hopefully guys like Granderson & Cano can continue their MVP-type seasons  and Swisher & Teixeira can finally have strong post-seasons to take some of the burden off of Alex.  The Playoffs usually come down to which team pitches the best and comes up with the big hits when they are needed.  ARod always seems to come up in those big ABs and hopefully he will be physically sound so he can do his job.  With the other weapons on this team, Alex shouldn’t feel the pressure to carry the team like he used to.  If he can just have a solid October, I think the offense will their job and the Yankees fate will rest on the arms of its starting pitchers.

  1. A big A-Rod postseason and no one will remember how much time he missed this season.

  2. Fish – the Boli boy is history. The juice takes it’s toll on everyone who shoots it in the ass. Ask Giambi and Cansenco. Hip, wrist, thumb, calf, testicles……….Aroid’s body is deterioating faster than Ken OR’s short term memory.

    • I was thinking of you while I was writing this Twasp. ARod was one of the few steroid users in baseball that probably didn’t need it at all. He was an enormous talent from the time he came up as a 19, 20 yr old.

He probably could have done what he did without the Roids and it seems he is paying for it now with some of these injuries. The thumb injury was a freak injury but one has to wonder about all of the lower body pulls and tears…….hip, groin, knee & calf all in the last 3 years. When a person builds unnatural muscles their ligaments and cartilage are put under enormous stress and I wonder if this was the cause of some of these injuries.

I hope these injuries don’t continue because with that ridiculous salary, we need him healthy & productive for the next 6+ years.

    • HIS TESTICLES? HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT? EVEN TO THEIR BREAKUP, CAMERON WAS ALWAYS SMILING.

  3. Seriously though, we no longer need Arod to carry us in the playoffs. With the emergence of Grandy as a 40 power guy and Cano as maybe the best all around hitter in the AL we have enough O to get us to the show. It’s the starting pitching that will be the deciding factor as to how far we advance.

  4. Don’t fret none about $ when it comes to the Yankees. If they want someone they spend to get them . $ is never a deterent. 1.6billion dollar value with unlimited financial resources from multiple income streams.

Be more concerned that Boli boy will hog a spot in the lineup when his bat has become compromised and a prospect is left waiting for a chance to mature.

    • Yes, that is the problem. the Yanks wont let money stop them from getting someone but they have shown that players making big money will be given a million chances and won’t be removed from the team except in rare cases (Igawa).

AJ Burnett would have been replaced or flat out dumped if he wasn’t owed another $33M after this season. Jorge would have been released this season if he wasn’t making $13M.

If ARod is struggling at the age of 40, he’ll likely still be playing because of the huge money he’s owed. That is the concern about the contract.

  5. Aroids testicles are so shriviled from Boli use that Cameron mistakenly would put them on her oatmeal in the morning.

  6. Fish -look at some pics of Arod before Boli …. a skinny kid….. and Aroid after he found Boli in his Wheaties ……His head could fit on Mt Rushmore.

    • He was a skinny kid…but he could play. At 20 years old, he hit .358 with 54 Doubles and 36 HRs. I don’t think he needed the Roids to be great but he stupidly took them.

Alex always seemed like an insecure kid trying way to hard to fit in and make people accept him or like him.

It seems like he had a huge load lifted off him after leading the team to the 2009 WS. he started to act more natural and appeared more comfortable in his own skin.

      • Yeah ….. I agree Fish ……the Roid would have been a great player wihtout the syringe in his buttocks. And his drive to be the best and his insecurities led him to cheat. From Texas through to 2007 he was on juice , his cousin was rooming with him on the road , he paid off league reps to tip him off on when tests would be,but I actually dont blame him ,,,, with Ortiz and Manny and practically every other power hitter juicing we needed him to level the playing field.

Aroids character leaves much to desire, he’s a primma donna, fake, classless liar and thats why TWASP will always like Jeter better (along with 99% of the players, mgrs, coaches and fans of baseball). (the one noticeable exception is a commenter on this site…..who will be left un-named……..due to his receding hairline and low supply of Xanax)

  7. Fish – look at the way Jeter can still play – amazing. What a play behind second on the field …. still pop on the bat. McCarver said that all of his critics at the start of the season are now hiding under a rock . Do you know anyone who is still in denial about him ?

    • I don’t like to make it a Jeter vs ARod thing because I like them both as long as they are Yankees.

Jeter has lot some as all players do in their late 30’s. However, like you and I said after last season, he improved from last season and has proven he can still be an excellent player.

Since returning from the injury, he has played like an All-Star in the 2nd half and right in line with the back of his baseball card.

    • Twasp says:

McCarver said that all of his critics at the start of the season are now hiding under a rock . Do you know anyone who is still in denial about him ?

      Hmmm, where is Ken?

      Haha. Just kidding Ken.

  8. Don’t worry Mike, I am here and enjoying Twasp twist and turn things to fit.
What he forgets are the stats for this year on defense for Jeter or the errors the other night. He has the same amount of errors Nunez has for the year (@SS) and fans say he can’t play SS because he makes to many errors.
Picking which stats to use is fine for kids but, not grown-ups!
Besides, Jeter is doing better then I expected of him this year, his range is down big time this year and his hitting needs help…this is comparing him to himself…he is 37 at SS. 37 with a week bat and less range is not good,,,next year it will go down more.

This is what I am fearful of! Just think of the big number of fans that will see Jeter on the down side of a very very good and productive HOF career, for the first time!?! They will hear Mike Kay etc., talk about a normal play as though it was a spectacular Jeter type play. We are hearing Kay and others talk as though Jeter was the reason the Yankees won those WS games, all by himself! We are already hearing it now…the great cover-up for a player on the way out.

Jeters best move would be…call it quits after this year. Go Out On Top Jeter!

    • Jeter does have the same amount of errors (12) as Nunez , Ken, you are correct…….but Nunez has committed that amount in only 150 chances ….while Jeter has had 421 chances.

      Nunez has only a 92% fielding % compared to Jeter’s 97%.

Sorry Ken, your HS Math Dept just called….they want you to take the GED again.

      • Twasp, my good man, I knew that! You bit on the thing I was getting to…thank you!

Jeter started out as the starting SS but still had many errors.
Nunez is playing 4/5 positions…which do you think has the harder job? Nunez will continue getting better and if his bat continues to improve as it has…SS here he is.
I have no idea if he will be the SS of the future but, he is there right now.

Don’t be another Posada Jeter, stop while you have it all!

  9. Ken OR – excellent rebuttal…….you are on top of your game.

Your best move now is to call it quits commenting on websites…..and go out on top!

  10. Again, using only the numbers that work for you, it’s not about Nunez vs Jeter…it’s about Jeter of now (and beyond) against Jeter of his HOF days. Who cares if Nunez is our next SS (who else?), it’s about going out on top! Kay is driving me crazy, along with dumb and dumber (on the radio) doing the same thing.
No matter how much fans will hear from the TV and writers, after a while they will turn on him. Remember, this is a “What have you done for me lately?” fan base…the Yankee fans want to win…all the time, you are seen to be in the way of that, you are history!

  11. Ken – you cant pick up your marbles………you’ve obviously lost them.

  12. Does anyone on this site agree with Ken’s alternate universe logic:

that when a veteran is playing on top of his game …he should retire?????????

PS – Dan found one of your marbles under the couch
