About Matthew S.

Avid Yankee fan since birth. I have been going to Yankee games with my father since i was young. I have many memories at YSII including many playoffs and world series games. I hope that you enjoy our blog. Comment often.

  1. Nunez is so frustrating to watch. I know he is young but it’s still hard to watch.

  2. Agreed, he has played brutal defense this season but Wally Matthews needs to chill. When did anyone associated with the Yankees EVER say Nunez was “the second coming of Jeter” or how were Cashman & Girardi “in their haste to find a replacement for Jeter”?

What is this guy talking about?

They gave Jeter a 3 yr deal with an option for a 4th. How was that being hasty to replace him? No one was ready to dump Jeter except for the media and certain fickle fans. And NO one in their right mind ever would say Nunez is the 2nd coming of Jeter who is a certain 1st ballot HOF’er and arguably one of the top 5 SS’s of All-Time.

Nunez is a talented player who has a future in this league. His defense has been horrible but he did a solid job at SS when Jeter was on the DL and was adequate filling in at 3B when ARod was out. He was their only IF back-up all yr so had to be ready to play all positions. His 18 errors are ugly but he has made a good deal of offensive contributions.

It’s easy for Matthews to pick on Nunie now because he made the 2 bad errors ystrday and is in the midst of a 3 for 28 slump over the last 2 wks. But before that, he was hitting .280/.328/.402 with 19 sbs.

He’s got a lot of skills….good bat speed, good contact skills, quick hands, tremendous speed and a rocket arm. With those abilities, he can improve on his defense to be a solid SS in this league going forward. I think he has had a solid year for a 24-yr old rookie and definitely projects to be a starting SS in this league. When he’s 27-28, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be a .290/.340/.420 hitter with double digit HRs and 35+ SBs. Those are great numbers for a SS.

    • agreed Fish about your comments about Matthews. IMO he is probably one of the worst baseball writers out their covering the Yankees and probably all of sports. He is quick to judge and sometimes tweets false information than has to retract it. I don’t know how a reputable franchise like ESPN keeps him on the payroll.

    • Good points Fishjam…
Fans sometimes forget, going from AAA to the majors is one heck of a step. Everything is faster and the players are much better.
By comparison, Nunez has 12 errors at SS over two years. Jeter had 22 in 1996 and 18 in 1997 and 24 in 2000…a lot of errors right? Yes but, so what, his bat made up for it…to some extent and that is for about 155 games a year.
If Nunez can have great range and still only end up with 12 to 20 errors a year…well, it’s not real great but, we can live with it. As one knows, errors can be checked by being at one position all the time and hard work.
Jeter is not ready to step down yet, his range is gone along with his bat (high expectations .313) but he gets the job done. The days of Jeter being the Jeter of old are over but, Nunez is still a work in progress…Jeter is not!

      • If some of you fans think I am dising Jeter, I am not.

“The days of Jeter being the Jeter of old are over but, Nunez is still a work in progress…Jeter is not!”

Meaning; Jeter is still good for the Yanks, so far!

  3. Just admit you were wrong when you said Jeter was washed up Ken. And Fish won’t call you a fickle fan anymore.

Boli boli Bo boli banana fana fo foli….

  4. Twasp…
Always good to hear from you!?!
I never said Jeter was washed up! I said he was on the way out as the Jeter of old; BA-.313/ OBP-.383/ 16-HR/ 206-Hits…those are good numbers.
Expect lower numbers with spikes off and on. As of now he is: Avg.-.296/OBP-.355/HR-5/Hits-144…he may end up with the lowest number of hits (other then 2003-156) ever…for him.
Take off the rose colored glasses and see the facts, Jeter, Posada and Mo…the last of the “Core Four” are on their last leggs. Yes, even Mo is human after all, he has been working harder and throwing more pitches then ever before…my god, fans think he can go on for ever?
The Best SS the Yankees ever had and the best closer ever to play…are on the way out…damn, everyone gets old.
Twasp…that isn’t being “Fickle”, it is being able to read the stitches on the fast ball!
I was a fan of the Yankees before you were even thought of, I have my favorite players but, “I am a Yankee Fan First and foremost” that means “If you can’t do the job, get out before it is too late”!

  5. All player’s numbers go down as they get older…. doesn’t take a baseball genius to see that. What you are guilty of is prematurely burying players that are not yet done.

When will you admit you did this with Jeter this year and was way off base. Everyone knows you are just being hardheaded and too proud to confess. Come on … Cowboy up….. Even Patrick has gone on record admitting to it. IT’S YOUR TURN!

  6. Twasp what’s your thoughts on Montero so far?

  7. You said;
“All player’s numbers go down as they get older….”

This is what I have been saying for a year. Check his stats for offense and defense for this year, down in everything.
You still don’t get the point…which is; I want him to go out on top, not as a has been. Joe D went out on top, Paul O’Nell left on top. If Jeter and Mo stay around much longer, they will go out as did; Willie Mays, Hammering Hank, Mickey and Bernie.
I have seen too many great players go out after hitting bottom.
Jeter has his record, get out after this year! Mo will have his record, if not this year next year, get the record and get out.
How many times have you heard the words; “You should have seen him a few years ago, he was the best!”
I don’t want Any Yankee to fail, just go out with grace.
