Good evening Yankees fans! There wasn’t much going on in Yankee land today but the Yankees did make some  headlines.

– Curt Schilling had nothing nice to say about the Yankees as he even went as far as to say that the Yankees are the favorites in the AL East

– Yankees sent RHP Kevin Whelan outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

This is your open thread where you can talk about anything Yankees!

Thank you and have a great night!

  1. Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Wednesday that adding a new pitcher is “unlikely.”

    • When you’re only offering guys like Oswalt and Jackson $5 or $6MM “unlikely” seems like an understatement.

      • ha ain’t that the truth. You would have to think though that the price for them could or might go down to somewhere close to that since no team has nabbed them up yet.

        • Actually I don’t think that will be the case. I think Oswalt will retire before he accepts a salary of $5 or $6MM. Since Jackson is a Boras client I don’t think there is any way Jackson accepts a 1 year/$5 or $6MM deal.

  2. I’m just thinking out loud. But I’m wondering if there has been any consideration by the Yankees about talking to the Angels about an Abreau trade.

I would think the Angels might welcome the salary relief and looking at their roster the Angles have an ample supply of players that I doubt he would be missed if he were traded.

Like I said just thinking out loud.

    • interesting thought. Would Abreu want to become a bench player though.

      • He’s probably scheduled to be a bench player anyway with the Angels in 2012. With all the players as of today the Angels have that can/will man the outfield at some point during the season:
        Trumbo
        Hunter
        Trout
        Wells
        Bourjos
        etc…and Abreau

I don’t think DH’ing is going to be big issue.

  3. Well looks like the 1st arbitration case of the 2012 season goes to the team (National) over John Lannan.

  4. Edwin Jackson is off the board.

UPDATE: The Nationals sign Edwin Jackson to a one-year deal

    • Bad news for Yanks.I really thought the NATS could use A.J.
One less place to dump him.

      • I think the chances were pretty remote the Yankees were going to trade AJ this off season, as much as I would have loved it to happen. They just would have had to eat to much of his salary.

Next years off season could be a completely different story. I can see the Yankees eating about $10MM of the $16.5MM due him at that time. A lot depends on how well Hughes pitches this year and I’m going to assume how well Manuelos looks in Triple A during the year. I think they will determine the fate of AJ almost as much as AJ himself. But that’s just my opinion.

And let’s not forget the potential FA class that might be available come next winter.

    • I hope they give the Phillies a run at it.
